About the artist:
Peter Richards is an artist and curator who has been living and working in Belfast since 1994. Originally from Cardiff, he studied at Howard Gardens, University of Wales, and furthered his studies by gaining an MPhil at the Ulster University in 1998. He has been director of the Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast since 2002, profiling established contemporary artists from Northern Ireland as well as providing a platform for emerging artists.
The Memorials Series comprises photographs, taken using a pinhole camera, showing state, community and personal memorials across Belfast. The statue depicted here stood at the Queen Victoria Royal Jubilee Schools in Durham Street until 1975, just after the schools closed due to the changing demography of Belfast during the Troubles. In 2003, Belfast City Council, owner of the statue, placed it in the Rest Garden in the loyalist Shankill Road area. In a society trying to emerge from decades of conflict, memorials remain powerful signifiers of territory and allegiance.
